Forest Beach is a mixed-use area that many “old timers” consider to be the unofficial downtown of Hilton Head Island. It was developed in the 1950’s as a casual beach community, close to what was at that time the island's only shopping center. Forest Beach is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Shipyard's 340-room Sonesta Resort to the north, and the Sea Pines Plantation Ocean Gate to the south. No property is located more than a five minute walk from the beach.
Coligny Circle, which separates North Forest Beach from South Forest Beach, was named after French admiral Gaspard de Coligny, who, in 1562, sent naval officer and navigator Jean Ribaut to the New World in an attempt to establish a French colony in what is now the southeastern coast of the United States.
The southernmost part of South Forest Beach (called Lawton Beach and Palm Forest) is a family-oriented neighborhood located within a few hundred yards of the Sea Pines Montessori Academy and the Hilton Head Preparatory School. North Forest Beach is an excellent investment and rental location, due to its close proximity to the second Van Der Meer Tennis Center and Coligny Plaza's shops and restaurants.
Forest Beach villa groups include Hilton Head Beach Club, North Shore Place, Ocean Club, Ocean One, Shorewood, The Breakers, and Sea Crest Villas to name a few. Everything from small beach cottages to eight bedroom oceanfront mansions are also available to rent and purchase.
