Rose Hill Plantation, once part of Devil’s Elbow Barony, was granted to Sir John Colleton by King Charles II in 1718. Construction of the rice plantation home, now known as the Rose Hill Mansion, was begun in the 1850’s by then owner, Dr. John Kirk, and was the first Gothic Revival home in the Lowcountry. In 1983 the Rose Hill Mansion was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Now privately owned, the mansion is open for tours, weddings, and group events by special invitation.
Rose Hill encompasses 2,000 acres divided between the Country Club side—with its 18-hole golf course, Racquet Club, and two community pools—and the Estate side—featuring an equestrian center, community pool, Colleton Point Pavilion (with dock, boat landing, and picnic area), and the Rose Hill Mansion. Rose Hill's acclaimed equestrian center consists of stables, paddocks, and a polo field, plus 50 acres of pasture and 17 miles of greenbelt riding, biking, and hiking trails.
